Creative Crafty Friends hosted a mixed media bookmark swap and I jumped in! I don’t read paperback books since I bought my Kindle years ago. But I do happen to have a couple books of my own I published and I could certainly use a couple bookmarks for those. The swap called for us to make two and I will show you one today.
The lady my bookmarks were going to likes steampunk and the beach. A good combination, yes? Hahaha! So I pulled out some items for each category and got busy.
I began with some sturdy paper that I cut into sections about 2″ x 8″ – a total guess because I forgot to measure before I mailed them off. I thought these colors of Distress inks would be great for steampunk.
I used all three ink pads and rubbed them directly onto my craft mat.
Next I sprayed some water onto the color. I love how it beads up!
I rubbed one side of the bookmark through the color, making sure to get some good coverage. I knew that a lot of the surface would be covered up with ephemera so it was even more important to get some good color into the fews areas that would be showing.
I was pretty happy with the colors and used my heat gun to dry this side.
Then I came back in with those same ink pads and scuffed some color onto the surface – right over the color I already had.
And I added all the colors till I was happy.
And happier. Hahahahaha!
I took the elements I wanted to incorporate and ran them through the sticker machine.
Some of the pieces I had to cut into separate bits to use. After removing the sticker backing paper, I adhered the pieces in a pleasing order.
After cutting the overhang away, I inked the edges which you totally can not see in this photo. Sorry. I laminated these bookmarks and they have already been received into their new home. I’ll show you the second bookmark real soon.
