You may remember this piece of art from a
few weeks back. Seriously fun to do!
Let me introduce you to a product from
that makes it easy to reinvent this piece
down the road!
Recently I have been doing some product reviews for
They generously sent me product to try out in my
personal art use and I am posting my results as I make the art.
The book you see above is a real gem!
It is called the
and it is super awesome!
You can read about the diary by clicking
that pink link that says Sketch Diary.
Or read the rest of this post because I
tell you about it, too!
When you open the book you see that the left-hand
pages are all lined.
The right-hand pages are all blank.
I thought and thought about what I could use
this book for and it has really come in handy,
but let me tell you more about it first.
You’ve already seen the diary is spiral bound.
That is important because it allows the pages
to lay completely flat when open.
Not all books do that.
An attached stretchy band holds all your wonderful
information closed in and safe when you aren’t
working in the sketch diary.
It comes with that paper band wrapped around it.
I kept my paper band and . . .
. . . stored it in the pocket found on the inside back cover.
Perfect size for stashing notes, postage stamps, photographs,
and kind of flat-ish memorabilia.
And the paper band.
In case you want to refer to it later.
You also get two label stickers you can use on the cover to identify what notes you have stored in this particular book.
So let’s get back to that string rose project.
I said I could use this book to re-create that project.
Here is what I did.
One day I went on a color fun expedition and made
a whole bunch of colorful pages to use later.
On the lined left-hand page, I made detailed notes
about the product used and the techniques I employed.
This particular project used the
Cézanne Mould-Made Cold Pressed Watercolor Paper.
I noted some characteristics of the paper,
then went on to list the other products I used.
I also made notes explaining how the paper reacted
to my products so I could make a valid review later.
On the right-hand blank page, I attached photos
of the before and after.
Scanned and printed from my home printer.
Not great quality photos, but good enough for my purposes.
With these notes I could make this project again
in a couple weeks, or months, or years even.
Thanks to my Sketch Diary!
The Sketch Diary has 60 sheets inside,
which means you can record the process for a
whole lot of projects!
That is great news!
And that is exactly what I am doing.
The two pieces of art shown above have not been
completed. I still want to draw on them, or make
collage art, or mixed media with them.
But I went ahead and made all the notes at the
time I made the color, so I could recall the
When I get ready to make blog posts about those two pieces of art,
I can refer back to these pages and recall how I made them.
So I can explain the steps to you.
Cause that’s what I do!
Here is a mixed media page I posted about recently.
On that left-hand page I detailed all the product.
And I used a lot!
From that list, I will have enough information that
I can make a similar piece again.
No two pieces of art are ever exact replicas,
but the steps involved in the creation
I still love this one!
Not only do I have my Sketch Diary notes
to think back on, I keep most of my artwork
in portfolio binders.
So I have the originals as well.
Another colorful background waiting to be completed.
And the notes are so important!
Actually, I may complete this one next!
The notes are key!
Here is a project I will be doing again!
And again, probably!
It was that much fun!
And with these notes, I can do just that!
I really love the little vignette book I made with
the Cézanne Mould-Made Cold Pressed
My Sketch Diary still has room for a whole lot of projects! It is the perfect note keeping book to record my art and how I create it.
I would welcome you to pick up one of your own and put it to use!
I will probably show you mine from time to time
and you are certainly going to want one of your own.
here are a list of places in the United States where you can
grab yourself a Hahnemühle Sketch Diary.
(If you live outside the United States, you can
google places to purchase the
Hahnemühle Sketch Diary.)
I would love to hear what you did with yours.
Have a great weekend.
