Ringz, a Fun Tangle!

I first introduced this tangle three years ago. And what a fun little tangle it is! Easy to draw, fun to make, versatile and useful as a feature tangle, a border, filler, it could even be used as a string. Ringz! So named thanks to all the little rings I drew making this alien looking work of fun-ness!

This was the very first piece of art I drew using ringz. I was in the Detroit airport during a layover flight and needed something easy to tangle as I balanced my sketchbook on my lap, along with my iPad and earphones. I had been obsessed with these little eyeball features and needed somewhere to use them, and in the Detroit airport ringz was brought to life.

Super easy to tangle, Ringz is a forgiving and flexible pattern. Start with a circle and start adding rings under that, building one below the one before it. I decided to make mine extend as arms from a central point. Then I added the little wink of an eye at the end.

I began layering them with circles filled with various tangles. And ringz just took on a life of its own.

Hahaha! This one was fun! Another tangle I really enjoy is narwal. Narwal, ringz and printemps were made for each other! Side note – those awesome colors are courtesy of LolliZ Gel Pens. Great sparkle.

This is probably the most dynamic piece I’ve tangled using ringz. I was going for some heavy contrast, so I pulled in another pattern of mine – patch – and filled those large spheres with it. Shading made a huge difference in this piece of art.

It’s all about the details. So much fun! But, my favorite ringz piece of all time is this next one!

This was tangled on a background created by Geneviéve Crabe. You can check out her store Amaryllis Creations by clicking here. I incorporated ringz with my pattern called nebula and an awesome little space dude based on Sandy Bartholomew’s Lilah Beans.

I would love for you to work with ringz and let me know what you think. You can see more of my original tangle patterns by clicking here. And anytime you want, you can click on My Patterns at the very top of this wall in the black box. Thanks for reading <3

    • thanks, sandra, it is a fun one when you don’t feel like thinking about it

    • I love making patterns. I have so many ideas running through my head just wanting to be sketched out on paper

  1. Nebula has such depth to it & reminds me of a swirly jellyfish somehow, terrific partner with Ringz, those eyes all make me feel ‘watched’ as if the artwork is looking back at you.

    • there are eyes all around 🙂 I do love drawing this tangle, it is so much fun!
